YAG Laser

Laser, Optics, Quantum Mechanics
But they [the US Defense Dept.] were exceedingly happy about the prospect of a death ray, Buck Rogers style, although I wasn't so hot on that idea . There were plenty of real applications for the laser, but that's what got them in.

-Gordon Gould, inventor of the optical laser

Using this equipment you will investigate the behavior of commonly used pump laser system. You will control a diode laser whose beam will be directed on a Nd:YAG crystal, whose atomic transitions you will exploit in order to create a newer and narrow band width laser.

The control box for the diode laser. This will allow you to choose the temperature of the diode, as well as the current running through it (injector current).

This picture shows the relative position for the frosted glass pane. Notice that it is no where near direct incidence from the laser!

In this picture the track is set up with only (left to right): diode laser, collimating lens, focusing lens, YAG crystal, and photodetector. I wonder what these students were testing?
